This ID card thing, it’s a real head-scratcher, you know? I heard some folks talking ’bout getting one of them Trinidad and Tobago ID cards. I was thinkin’, “What in tarnation is that?”

What’s a Trinidad and Tobago ID Card?

Well, seems like it’s some kinda card they use down in them islands, Trinidad and Tobago. Like our driver’s licenses, but not for drivin’. Just for, you know, showin’ who you are. Says you’re a somebody down there. It is called a National Identification Card.

They say you gotta be livin’ there to get one. Makes sense, I reckon. Can’t just waltz in and say, “Gimme one of them cards!” Nope, gotta be a resident. Live there for a year I heard. Then you can go to some place called the Elections and Boundaries Commission. Sounds fancy, don’t it?

Who Can Get This Card?

Now, listen up. If you ain’t from around them parts, you can still get one. But there’s rules, always rules. I think they said if you are from some place called the Commonwealth, and you’re 15 years old or more, and you’re living there, you can register to vote. When you do that, then you get the card. That’s what the young folks are talking about.

• Gotta be 15 or older. That’s what they say.
• Commonwealth citizen, whatever that means.
• Livin’ in Trinidad and Tobago, of course.

Can’t Get It If You’re Out of the Country

Heard some fella askin’ if he could get one of these cards while he’s livin’ somewhere else. Nope, can’t do it. They say you gotta be in Trinidad and Tobago. If you’re livin’ abroad, you gotta keep your old, expired card. Makes no sense to me, but that’s what they say. You’re expected to keep an expired document until you can return. That’s the rule I guess.

And another thing, some folks think they can just fly down to Trinidad and Tobago and get one. No siree! It is for residents only. They say you gotta live there. Havin’ a house there don’t count, I guess. I don’t have a house there or anything. Gotta actually be livin’ there, breathin’ the air, eatin’ the food, you know the drill.

Now, what if you lose your precious little card? Well, I heard someone askin’ if you can just walk in and get a new one. Before, you had to make an appointment online first. I don’t know about that online stuff. Sounds like a lot of fuss. They’re callin’ it a walk-in. Just go in there and say, “Hey, I lost my card!” Maybe it’s easier now.

This is why folks want this Trinidad and Tobago ID thing. It is like the key to everything down there. You need it for the bank, the doctor, maybe even to buy a mango from the market lady. It proves you are who you say you are, you know?

I don’t think I need to buy Trinidad and Tobago ID card though. Too much for an old lady like me. But for the young folks movin’ down there, sounds like it’s important. If you’re thinking about living in Trinidad and Tobago, you better learn about this ID card. You don’t wanna get caught without it. That is my advice.

This whole ID card business is confusing. But I hope I cleared it up a bit. Just remember, Trinidad and Tobago ID card is for folks who live there. If you ain’t livin’ there, you’re outta luck. And if you lose it, you gotta go get a new one. Simple as that. But it is not that easy I guess. There are still rules.

You need to do a lot of things before you can buy Trinidad and Tobago ID card. You need to become a resident first. You need to find a place to live. I think this is very difficult. But maybe it is easy for you. I don’t know.
