Alright, so I’ve been wanting to get a Belarusian driving license for a while now. It’s not like I need it immediately, but it’s something that’s been on my to-do list. I mean, who knows when you might need to drive around in Belarus, right?

First things first, I started by doing some digging online. I found out that you gotta be at least 18 years old to drive there, which is no problem for me. And you need a full valid driving license. Okay, cool, I have my local one, but it turns out I also need something called an International Driving Permit (IDP).

Getting the IDP

  • So, I looked into this IDP thing. It’s basically a translation of your driver’s license into a bunch of languages, making it easier for foreign authorities to understand.

  • Started browsing through the website. I filled out the application form. Pretty standard stuff, nothing too complicated.

  • Then, I uploaded a recent photo of myself (3x4cm, they specified) and attached a scan of my current driver’s license. Simple enough.

Waiting Game

  • After submitting everything, I had to wait for about 5 working days. Not too bad, considering it’s an official document and all that.

  • The website says the IDP is valid for a year, so that’s plenty of time to plan a trip and actually use it.

Belarusian Driving License

  • Now, for the actual Belarusian license. It seems like you can use the IDP for a while, but eventually, you’ll need the real deal if you’re planning on staying long-term.

  • From what I gathered, you gotta enroll in a driving school there and take a 3-month course, and this includes both theory and practical lessons. I guess it’s to make sure you know the local rules and all. And of course, you have to pass a test at the end.

So, that’s where I’m at right now. I got my IDP sorted, which is one step closer to driving in Belarus legally. I’m not in a huge rush to take the driving course yet, but it’s good to know what the process is like. Maybe I’ll start brushing up on some Belarusian traffic laws in my spare time. You never know when that information might come in handy!

Anyway, I thought I’d share my experience so far. It’s not every day you try to get a foreign driver’s license, right? I’ll keep you guys updated if anything interesting happens along the way. Maybe one day, I’ll be cruising down the streets of Minsk without a care in the world. Fingers crossed!
