So, I gotta tell you about the time I got my hands on a Thai driving license. Let me tell you, it wasn’t exactly a walk in the park, but it wasn’t rocket science either. If you’re sticking around in Thailand for a while, you’re gonna want one of these bad boys.
First off, I found out most of the action happens at the Department of Land Transport (DLT). You gotta show up in person for most of it. But, I did manage to get a head start online, which saved me a bit of time, not gonna lie.
Getting Started
I started by gathering all the documents I needed. You know, the usual stuff like my passport, visa, and proof of address. I made sure to make copies of everything ’cause you never know when you’ll need an extra.

Making the Appointment
Next, I hopped online and booked an appointment at the DLT office. This was pretty easy to do on their website. I picked a date and time that worked for me, and just like that, I was all set.
The Big Day
When the day rolled around, I made my way to the DLT office. It was a bit chaotic, I won’t sugarcoat it. Lots of people, lots of lines. But, I was prepared. I had all my documents in a neat little folder, ready to go.
Tests and More Tests
First, there was a color blindness test, which was a breeze. Then came the reflex test. I had to hit the brakes when the light turned red. Simple enough, right? I passed with flying colors, if I do say so myself.
After that, there was a vision test. They checked my depth perception and peripheral vision. Again, no problem for me. I aced it!
The Written Test
Now, this was the part I was a bit nervous about – the written test. It’s all about traffic rules and regulations in Thailand. I studied a bit beforehand using an app, which really helped. I took my time, read each question carefully, and guess what? I passed!
The Driving Test
Finally, the moment of truth – the driving test. I had to drive around a small course they set up. Parallel parking, stopping at a stop sign, the whole nine yards. I kept my cool, remembered everything I learned, and I nailed it.
Getting the License
After all the tests, I went back inside, paid the fee, and got my photo taken. And just like that, I had my very own Thai driving license. It felt pretty good, I gotta admit.
So, there you have it. My experience getting a driving license in Thailand. It was a bit of a process, but totally doable. If I can do it, you can too! Just remember to gather your documents, book an appointment, and study for the written test. Good luck!
