So, I finally got around to applying for my Indian driving license online. I’d heard it could be a bit of a hassle, but honestly, it wasn’t as bad as I’d feared. Here’s how it all went down, step-by-step.
First things first, I needed to figure out where to even start this whole process. A little digging online led me to the Sarathi website, which, I found out, is run by the Road Transport and Highways Ministry. It had everything I was looking for.
Getting Started
Once I got to the Sarathi website, I spotted the “Driving License” option right there on the left. Clicking on that, I saw a dropdown menu with an “Apply Online” option. That’s what I was looking for!

I needed to get my hands on the application forms. For a learner’s permit, it’s Form 1, and for the permanent license, it’s Form 4. Good to know that I have a foreign driver’s license and had no previous Indian driver’s license, I can apply for a brand new Indian DL directly.
Filling Out the Forms and Paying Up
The online forms were pretty straightforward. I just filled in all my details, uploaded the required documents, pretty standard stuff. And then came the payment. It wasn’t too much, and I was able to do it all online, which was super convenient.
The Waiting Game
After submitting everything, it was just a matter of waiting. I got a notification that my application was being processed. They even provided a way to track the application status online, which was pretty cool.
Getting the License
A few weeks later, I got another notification saying my license was approved! I had to go to my local Regional Transport Office (RTO) to pick it up. There might be a driving test involved, but since I already had a foreign license, I just needed to show them that and some other documents, and I was good to go. Honestly, the whole online application part saved me a ton of time. If you’re planning to get your Indian driving license, I’d definitely recommend doing it this way. I heard it will start from June 1, 2024, so good luck to you all!
That’s my experience with getting my Indian driving license online. Hope this helps anyone who’s about to go through the same process!
