Okay, so I decided to get a Finnish passport. First, I had to figure out where to even apply. I learned that Finland has set up places where you can enter and leave the country, and they check your documents there.
I found out I could apply for the passport at any local police station in Finland or even online through the police’s website. That sounded pretty convenient. Since I’m in Finland, I had these options readily available.
Here’s what I did:

- Checked the requirements: I made sure I had all the necessary documents.
- Filled out the application: I decided to do it online because it seemed easier. I went to the police’s website and started filling out the forms.
- Paid the fee: There was a fee, of course. I paid it online as well.
- Submitted my application: Once everything was filled out and the fee was paid, I hit submit.
They said I needed a travel document to leave Finland in most cases. Well, that’s exactly what I was applying for! They also talked about these “rapid” or “express” passports that you can get faster. I didn’t need it that urgently, but it’s good to know it’s an option.
The whole process was actually pretty smooth. I got my new Finnish passport in the mail! I also learned that if you’re applying from another country, you can do it at a Finnish mission, but you have to go in person. And if you apply online, you still have to go to a police station or a Finnish mission to prove your identity at some point. Good to know for the future, I guess.
What Else I Learned
Apparently, Helsinki Airport has a bunch of automated border control gates. I thought that was kind of cool. Also, if you’re 16 or older and flying within Finland or other Nordic countries, you should carry a passport, even though they don’t do border control. I made a mental note of that for when I travel around here.
And one last thing – if you have a Finnish alien’s passport or a refugee travel document, you should check with the country you’re going to if you can travel there and if you need a visa. That’s just common sense, really. All in all, it wasn’t too bad getting my Finnish passport. Just followed the steps and it all worked out.
