Alright, let’s talk about this Oman ID card thing, you know, the one they say everyone gotta have.

What’s this Oman ID card all about anyway?

And if you ain’t from around here, but you live here, gotta get a different card, a resident card they call it. Same idea though, shows who ya are and that you’re supposed to be here.

How do you get this card?

Now that’s the tricky part. It ain’t like walking into the store and buying a loaf of bread. Gotta go to some office, fill out papers, they say. Lots of papers, I bet. And gotta have all sorts of other papers too, to prove you are who you say you are. Birth certificate, they call it. Marriage paper, maybe, if you’re hitched. All that stuff.

And they take your picture, of course. Gotta look your best, I guess. Though, I don’t know how anyone looks good in them pictures they take. Always makes ya look like a scared rabbit.

What happens if you don’t got one?

Well, they say you gonna get in trouble. Can’t do nothin’ without it, like I said. Can’t get a job, can’t see the doctor, can’t even, I don’t know, maybe can’t even buy groceries. And they gonna fine ya too, five rials they say. That’s a lot of money, don’t you know it? Five rials could buy you a good meal, maybe two.

What’s so special about this card, anyway?

Seems like it ain’t just a card, you know, like a library card or something. This here’s a smart card, they call it. Fancy, huh? Got some kinda chip in it, like them phones the youngsters got. They say you can even use it to pay for things, like them government fees, marriage papers, birth papers, all that. Like putting money on it, then using it like a credit card, only it’s for this stuff.

And what about if your card expires, or you lose it?

Well, they say ya gotta go back to that office and get a new one. More papers, I bet. And more waiting. And you gotta do it before it expires, they say. Can’t let it run out, or you’re in trouble again. So ya gotta keep track of it, don’t lose it. Put it in a safe place, like your purse or your wallet. Don’t just leave it laying around, someone might steal it. And, if the expiry date getting close, ya better go get it done. Don’t wait till the last minute because these offices, they can be real busy.

Anything else I should know?

Just keep it safe, that’s all. And don’t let nobody else use it. It’s yours, and yours only. They say you gotta be present inside Oman to get it, makes sense I guess. Can’t just be sending people to get it for you. You gotta show up yourself.

And if ya need help, they got people to call. “Fil Khidma,” they call it. Means “in service” I guess. They’re supposed to help ya out if ya got questions, but I hear it’s sometimes difficult getting through to them. And they can answer all your questions about the card. So don’t be afraid to ask if you’re confused. It’s better to ask than to do it wrong and get in trouble.

They made it mandatory for everyone 10 and above.

Seems young to me, but that’s what they decided. Guess they want everyone accounted for, know who’s who and where they are. Maybe it’s for the best, I don’t know. Things sure are different now than they used to be. Back in my day, we didn’t have no cards, just knew everybody in the village and that was that. Now, everybody gotta have a card, even the little ones.
