Well now, listen up, y’all. You wanna get yourself a Bhutan drivin’ license, eh? It ain’t rocket science, but it ain’t like pickin’ apples neither. Let me tell you how it is, the way I see it.

First things first, what kind of license you needin’? You a foreigner? Or maybe you just fresh outta drivin’ school here in Bhutan? Makes a difference, you see.

If you’re a foreigner, things get a little bit trickier, but not too much. You gotta do what the locals do, plus a little bit more. You need to fulfill all the requirements for a new license, just like everybody else. And you gotta have a valid somethin’-or-other, like a permit from your own country, I reckon. They didn’t tell me exactly what, but it sounds important.

• Gotta fill out them papers, whatever they are.
• Gotta show ’em you can drive, without killin’ nobody.
• And gotta pay the fee, nothin’ in life is free, you know.

Now, if you’re just a young’un here in Bhutan, fresh out of drivin’ school, it’s a bit different. You gotta be 18 years old, that’s for sure. No drivin’ around in diapers, you hear? And you gotta go and book yourself a test date online. Them fancy young folks and their internets! You go to that RSTA website, whatever that is. Sounds important though. Don’t ask me how it works, I ain’t never seen one of them computery things.

Then, you gotta show up in person for the test. Can’t be sendin’ your grandma to do it for ya! And you gotta pass both the theoretical and the practical tests. That means you gotta know the rules of the road and show ’em you can actually drive the dang car. They got this “Evaluation Form for Driving Test”, sounds fancy, but it just means they gotta see if you can drive without crashin’ into a cow. And don’t forget, you gotta bring a passport-size picture, and it better be in that Bhutanese dress, all proper and whatnot.

International Driving Permit (IDP), you say? Well, that’s a whole ‘nother story. Seems like you can apply for that online too. But I ain’t too sure about that one. You best go ask them city folks, they know more about that internet stuff than I do. But from what I hear, you still gotta jump through some hoops. Can’t just wave a wand and get one, you know.

And where do you go to do all this? Well, you gotta go to the nearest office, wherever that may be. I ain’t got a list, you gotta find that out yourself. Maybe ask the young’uns, they always know these things.

Now, some things you gotta do, no matter who you are or what kind of license you want. You gotta have a certificate sayin’ you took some kind of introductory course. And remember, you need that latest passport-size photograph. For us Bhutanese folks, that means dressin’ up in our national dress. Don’t be showin’ up in your pajamas, they ain’t gonna like that one bit.

So there you have it. That’s the way I understand it, anyway. It ain’t so hard, long as you follow the rules and don’t try to be too clever. Just be patient, do what they tell ya, and you’ll be drivin’ around Bhutan in no time. Just be careful out there, them mountain roads ain’t always easy!
