Alright, so I wanted to get myself a Cambodian ID card, and I figured it wouldn’t be too hard to do it online. Boy, was I in for a ride.
First, I started digging around for info on how to actually apply for one of these things. Turns out, there’s something called the General Department of Identification at the Ministry of Interior, and that’s where foreigners like me need to go. I found out that Cambodians and foreign nationals with Cambodian citizenship could renew or apply for Family and Residence books, whatever that means.
I gathered all the documents I thought I would need. I submitted my passport and ID card, and even a selfie. And, I also created a 6-digit PIN which will use for any digital government service’s platform.

Then the waiting game began. I kept seeing news about thousands of ID cards being distributed nationwide, so I figured it wouldn’t take too long. I read somewhere that someone needed to bring a copy of their birth certificate, a Cambodian National ID card, and a marriage certificate if they were married. I’m not married, so I guess I dodged that bullet.
Eventually, I got a hold of someone who knew about this stuff, they told me to have some documents ready. I also read from an online forum that someone shared their experience and said that it’s not easy but also not that complicated. He said that you should make sure that you got all your papers in order.
After a while, I finally received my Cambodian ID card. It was a bit of a hassle, but I managed to get through it.
So, that’s my little adventure in getting a Cambodian ID card online. It wasn’t a walk in the park, but hey, I got it done!
