Okay, so here’s the deal. I needed a new Finnish ID card, and I figured, why not try doing it online? Sounds simple enough, right? Well, let me tell you, it was a bit of an adventure.
First things first, I headed over to the Finnish Police’s website. You know, the official one. It’s all in Finnish, naturally, but thank goodness for browser translation tools, am I right? I found the section for ID card applications, and it looked pretty straightforward. They laid out all the requirements nicely.
I needed a recent passport photo, and it had to be in electronic format. Luckily, I had just gotten one taken a few weeks ago. So, I double-checked the photo requirements they had listed – size, background color, all that jazz. Everything seemed good to go. You really should pay attention to these requirements.

Then came the fun part – filling out the online form. It was just like any other form, asking for my name, address, personal identification number, the usual stuff. I typed everything in, made sure there were no typos. After that, I uploaded my digital photo. I clicked the little “upload” button and selected the photo file from my computer. Piece of cake!
- Recent digital passport photo
- My personal details
- My old ID card (for some of the information)
Here’s what I had ready:
Next, the website showed me a preview of my application. I looked it over carefully, making sure everything was correct. It all looked good to me, so I moved on to the payment section. They had a few different payment options, but I just used my online banking. I filled in my bank details, confirmed the payment, and bam! Payment done.
After paying, I got a confirmation page. It said my application was submitted and gave me a reference number. I made a note of that number, just in case. The confirmation also mentioned that I would get an email when my ID card was ready. Cool.
And that was pretty much it! I just waited. A few days later, I got an email saying my ID card was ready for pickup. I went to the designated pickup location, showed them my old ID, and they handed me my shiny new Finnish ID card. The whole process was actually quite smooth, once I figured out the website. It definitely beat waiting in line at the police station!
So, if you’re in Finland and need a new ID card, give the online application a shot. It’s not as scary as it might seem. Just follow the instructions, have your documents ready, and you’ll be good to go.
