Well, let me tell you, gettin’ a driver’s license in South Africa, it ain’t like buyin’ cabbage at the market. It’s a whole to-do, I tell ya. But nowadays, these young folks, they got it easy. They do everything on that internet thing. They say you can order a South African driving license online. Sounds fishy to me, but what do I know?
I heard you gotta go to some website, somethin’ called “natis”. Sounds like a disease, if you ask me. But they say you gotta go there and fill out some forms. DL1, they call it. Like it’s some kinda secret code. You gotta put in all your information, I reckon. Name, where you live, all that stuff. They need to know who you are, I guess.
Now, if you ain’t from around here, if you’re one of them foreigners, it’s even more complicated. They make you jump through hoops, I tell ya. You gotta go to this place, they call it DLTC, Driving Licence Testing Centre. Sounds important, don’t it? You gotta register there, whatever that means. And they make you take tests and all sorts. It’s a real bother.

They say you gotta have a valid driver’s license to drive on them roads. Otherwise, you’re in big trouble, let me tell you. And some of them big trucks, they need somethin’ special, a professional driving permit, they call it. More paperwork, I bet. Another thing is called temporary driving license. I think they give it to you while you are waiting for your real one.
They got this online licence booking thing now. It is said that is makes things run smoother. You can pick a date to go in and do your test. Back in my day, you just showed up and hoped for the best. These young people, they got it so easy. They don’t know how good they got it. They just click a few buttons on that computer, and boom, they got a driver’s licence test scheduled. They don’t know the struggle.
It don’t matter if you is South African or not, you need that license if you wanna drive here. And they say you gotta live in Gauteng or the Eastern Cape to use this here online thing. If you ain’t from there, well, you’re outta luck, I guess. You gotta do it the old-fashioned way. Go down to the office and wait in line for hours. Just like I used to do.
And after all that, you gotta wait. Four to six weeks, they say, for that license to be ready. Four to six weeks! Can you believe it? Back in my day, it took even longer. But they say they give you a temporary one right away. So you can still drive around while you’re waitin’.
Here’s the thing, you gotta pay for it, of course. Nothin’ in this life is free, you know. How much? Well, you gotta ask your local office. They’ll tell ya. It ain’t cheap, I can tell you that much. But if you wanna drive, you gotta pay.
- Go to that natis website, if you can figure it out.
- Fill out that DL1 form.
- If you’re a foreigner, go to that DLTC place.
- Take your tests, if you have to.
- Book your test online, if you live in the right place.
- Wait four to six weeks for your license.
- Pay the money.
I don’t know why they make it so hard. They just like to make things complicated, I think. But that’s the way it is. If you wanna drive in South Africa, you gotta play by their rules. It is not easy to get a South African driving license.
These young folks today, they got it easy with their internet. They can do everything online. Order groceries, talk to their friends, even get a driver’s license. Back in my day, we had to walk uphill both ways in the snow just to get to the store! And we liked it! Well, maybe not, but we didn’t have no choice. Now they can order a South African driving license online. Times change, I guess.
If you wanna try to get your license online, I guess you can. But don’t come cryin’ to me when it’s all too confusin’. I’ll just tell ya I told you so. Sometimes, the old ways are the best ways. Even if they take a little longer. Just do your best, and hopefully you can get your license.
