Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to get a Cambodian driver’s license for a while now, and I finally did it. It was a bit of a process, but totally doable. I thought I’d share my experience here in case anyone else is thinking about doing the same.

First off, I did some digging online to see what the deal was. Seems like there are a couple of places where you can apply for a 1-year Cambodian driving license – the Aeon Mall 2 or the General Department of Public Works and Transport. I decided to go with Aeon Mall 2 ’cause it was closer to where I was staying.

Here’s what I did:

  • Gathered my documents. This included my passport, visa, a few passport photos, and my current driver’s license from back home. I made sure to make copies of everything, just in case.
  • Headed to Aeon Mall 2. I found the service center for driving licenses, they do it on the second floor. It was pretty easy to spot.
  • Filled out the application form. They had English versions, which was a lifesaver. I just filled in all my details, pretty standard stuff.
  • Submitted my application and documents. The staff there checked everything over and took my photo. They were quite nice.
  • Paid the fee. I remember it was something around $400, give or take. Paid it in cash.

The whole process in the mall took about an hour, maybe a bit more. The staff told me it could take a week or so to get the actual license, I got mine in two weeks, so pretty good I guess!

Getting the License

After a couple of weeks, I got a call saying my license was ready. I went back to Aeon Mall 2, picked it up, and that was it! I was officially able to drive in Cambodia. Easy peasy!

Honestly, the whole thing wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Just make sure you have all your documents in order, and you’ll be fine. Now I can zip around on my motorbike without any worries. If you’re planning to stay in Cambodia for a while, I’d definitely recommend getting a local license. It just makes things so much easier.
