Buy East Timor Passport: Simple Steps and Requirements

Well, I’ll tell ya, getting one of them East Timor passports, it ain’t rocket science, but it ain’t like pickin’ apples neither.

First off, you gotta be a grown-up, see? No spring chickens allowed. And you gotta prove you’re a grown-up, with papers and stuff. They wanna make sure you ain’t some whippersnapper tryin’ to pull a fast one. They call it “legal majority,” fancy talk if ya ask me.

Then, they say you gotta been livin’ in East Timor for a good long while. Ten years, they say! Either before things got all messed up back in ’75, or after they settled down again in 2002. Ten years is a long time, let me tell ya. That’s a lot of sunrises and sunsets.

And get this, you gotta jabber in their lingo. Either that Portuguese stuff, or that Tetum, whatever that is. Sounds like a mouthful to me. And you gotta know a little somethin’ somethin’ about the place, too. Basic stuff, they say. Like where the market is, maybe, or how to get to the church.

• Live there for ten years.
• Speak the language.
• Know a bit about the place.

Now, if you’re thinkin’ about workin’ over there, that’s a whole ‘nother story. You’ll need a work permit, they call it. Or a work visa. Same difference, far as I can tell. Lets ya go there and work for a spell, whether they pay ya or not.

And if you’re just visitin’, well, you gotta have a passport that ain’t about to expire. At least six months left on it, they say. And you might need a visa, too. Sometimes they let you get one when you get there, which is mighty convenient. But you gotta have a ticket to go back home, or prove you got the money to buy one. And you gotta cough up 30 bucks, cash money, for that visa.

They also say, those East Timor folks, they can go to a whole bunch of countries without needing a visa. Sixty-two, I heard. Lucky ducks! Imagine goin’ all over the world without havin’ to mess with all that visa paperwork.

So, how do you actually get one of these passports? Well, you gotta fill out a form, of course. Always with the forms! And you gotta gather up some papers. Birth certificate, probably. Proof you live there. Stuff like that. They don’t make it easy, do they?

But they say it ain’t too hard, neither. If you got all your ducks in a row, that is. And if you need help, well, there’s folks who can give you a hand. Just gotta know where to look, I guess. Getting that passport, it opens doors, they say. Lets you see the world, or maybe just go visit your grandkids in another country.

Now, remember what I said about the visa? That’s just a paper that says you’re allowed to go visit for a while. It ain’t the same as livin’ there, or bein’ a citizen. That passport, that’s the real deal. That says you belong. That says you’re one of them. Or at least, that’s what I reckon.
