Okay, so I needed a driver’s license in Botswana. It’s not like back home, let me tell you. First thing I did was head over to the Department of Road Transport and Safety office. There are a few of them, but I went to the one in Gaborone.
Once I got there, I had to fill out this application form, the DL1. It wasn’t too bad, just the usual stuff – name, address, all that. After I got that filled out, I had to pay a fee for the theory test and schedule it. They gave me a date, and I went back on that day to take the test.
The theory test wasn’t a walk in the park. You really need to know the Botswana road rules. Luckily, I studied up, and I passed! Whew, that was a relief.

After I passed the theory test, I went back to the Licensing and Registration Office. This time, I had to pay for and schedule the practical driving test. More waiting, more anticipation.
- Filled out application (DL1)
- Paid theory test fee
- Booked and took theory test
- Paid practical test fee
- Booked practical test
Finally, the day of the practical test arrived. I was a little nervous, but I took some deep breaths and reminded myself I could do this. The instructor was pretty strict, but fair. We drove around for a bit, and he tested me on all sorts of things – parallel parking, three-point turns, you name it.
And guess what?
I passed! I was so happy, I could have jumped for joy. They issued me my Botswana driver’s license right then and there. It’s valid only in Botswana though. If you are a foreigner and want to drive there, you’d better have a valid international driving permit together with your original one. It was a bit of a process, but I got it done. Now, I can legally drive in Botswana! Just wanted to share my experience in case anyone else needs to get their license there. It’s doable, just be prepared to jump through a few hoops.
