Okay, so let’s talk about getting a Guam ID card. I recently went through the whole process, and boy, was it an experience! I needed to get an ID, so I figured I’d document the whole thing for anyone else who might be going through the same thing.
First off, I found out that the Department of Revenue and Taxation (DRT) is the place to go for this. It’s like their DMV, I guess. You gotta fill out some forms, of course. For just the ID, it seemed like I needed to complete sections 1A, 1B, 2, and 4 of the application. If you were going for a driver’s license, you’d add section 3 to that list. I went there.
The important thing I realized is that all the documents you provide have to be legit—original, unexpired, the whole nine yards. I heard some wild stories about people trying to pass off fake IDs or expired documents. Some even get turned away because the staff didn’t recognize Guam as a US Territory! Can you believe that?
I got all my documents in order. My birth certificate was a bit crumpled, but thankfully, it was still valid. I made sure to double-check everything. Then I filled out the application form. Let me tell you, those things are a maze. So many boxes to check and information to fill in!
- Went to the DRT office.
- Filled out sections 1A, 1B, 2, and 4 of the application.
- Made sure all my documents were original and valid.
After what felt like an eternity of filling out forms and waiting in line, I finally submitted my application. They took my photo right there. I probably look like a deer in headlights in that picture. They said it would take a few weeks to process.
I’ve also heard that you can actually do some of this stuff online now. Renewing or replacing your ID or driver’s license can be done through their website. Apparently, if you’re 18 or older, you can use the online system. I didn’t try that route, but I figured I’d mention it.
Waiting Game
The next few weeks were just a waiting game. I kept checking the mail every day, like a kid waiting for a toy he ordered online. Finally, the day came when a little envelope arrived from the DRT. My ID card! I ripped open that envelope so fast. There it was, my shiny new Guam ID card. Success!
It was a bit of a hassle, but I got it done. Now I have a proper Guam ID, which is pretty neat. If you’re planning to get one, just make sure you have all your documents in order and be prepared to fill out a bunch of forms. And if you’re eligible, maybe check out the online option to save yourself some time.
