Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to get a driver’s license in Martinique for a while now. Let me tell you, it wasn’t as straightforward as I thought it would be.
First off, I started digging around to see what the deal was with driving there. I found out that they drive on the right side of the road, which is the same as back home, so that was one less thing to worry about. But then came the license part. Turns out, if you don’t have a French driver’s license, you gotta get yourself an International Driving Permit (IDP).
So, I went ahead and got the IDP. It was a bit of a hassle, filling out forms and whatnot, but I got it done. I also made sure my regular driver’s license was valid and that I had it for at least two years, ’cause that’s a rule they have over there. Oh, and I needed my passport too for identification.
Once I had all my documents in order, I started thinking about renting a car. I mean, what’s the point of having a license if you can’t drive, right? I heard that SIXT was a good option, and they require you to be at least 21 with a license held for at least 2 years. I fit the bill, so that was good news.
- Get the application.
- Fill out the form and provide my documents.
- Get the IDP.
- Find a car rental in Martinique.
Honestly, driving in Martinique turned out to be a breeze. The roads are in pretty good shape, much better than some other islands I’ve been to. They’re well-marked too. I used my phone’s GPS and a map from the rental place, and I was golden. The coast roads were mostly flat, which made driving even easier.
My Experience Driving
Driving around, I really got to see the beauty of Martinique. I cruised along the coast, stopped at some cute little towns, and just enjoyed the scenery. It was so much easier to get around with a car. I could go wherever I wanted, whenever I wanted. No waiting for buses or taxis.
All in all, getting a driver’s license and driving in Martinique was a great experience. There were a few hurdles to jump through with the paperwork, but once that was sorted, it was smooth sailing. If you’re thinking about driving in Martinique, I say go for it. Just make sure you have all your ducks in a row with the license and rental stuff. And then, enjoy the ride!
