So, today I wanted to share my experience with getting an Estonian ID card online. It wasn’t as straightforward as I thought it would be, but I finally got it figured out.
First off, I started by doing some digging online. I found out that the Police and Border Guard Board is where you’re supposed to go for ID stuff. They’ve got a self-service website.
Here’s what I did:

- Checked out the requirements: I made sure I had all the necessary documents, you need to pay the state fee.
- Filled out the application: I went to the Police and Border Guard Board website and found the application form. It asked for a bunch of personal details, like an Estonian personal identification code, which has 11 digits, by the way.
- Submitted the application: Once I filled everything out, I double-checked all the info and hit submit. I had to pay a fee.
- Waited for processing: This is where the patience part came in. It took a few days for them to process everything. I kept checking the status on their website.
- Got approved! Finally, I got an email saying my application was approved. What a relief!
- ID card functionIt said on the website that ID card is a digital document to be used in Internet banking or other e‑services.
- Paid the fees: I found out that there’s a fee for getting the ID.
- Got the ID: A few days later, I got my shiny new Estonian ID card in my email!
Overall
It was a bit of a process, but I managed to get my Estonian ID card online. If you’re planning to do the same, just be prepared to fill out some forms, pay some fees, and wait a bit. But hey, it’s worth it in the end!
